Rick nelson, RA
Senior Architect

Rick utilizes his 34 years of architectural experience in his role as a project leader at Dirk Denison Architects, particularly looking at design and detail development. His primary approach to practice is a collaborative one, carefully developing ideas in a way that balances material exploration and spatial performance.
In his work, Rick prioritizes physically working with materials to realize ideas across many scales. This allows him to deeply understand his projects and meaningfully impart his knowledge to clients, colleagues, and students alike. This passion can be found in his projects even outside DDA — his interest in wood work is especially helpful in the years-long process of restoring a 1908 concrete block home with original wood windows, interior wood details and finishes, and building systems.
Beyond the office, Rick is a founding member of the McKinley Park Development Council, and can often be found as a guest jurist at IIT College of Architecture studio reviews.
